Year 2 A - Mr Fillis 2019 - 2020

Mr Fillis

 Mr Fillis' Class Page.

I would like to say a very warm welcome to my class page. We have had a wonderful start to the term in Year Two. I am so impressed with how hard everyone is working and we have adopted Peter Rabbit's motto to help us when work gets tricky... A good rabbit never gives up.

READING: In our class, we have a guided reading session once a week where we all help each other. We use our phonics and spelling rules to help us with unfamiliar words, clarifying the meaning too. We are now focusing on inference and answering questions based on the text. We also make predictions of what we think will happen next, based on what has happened so far.  Your child will bring home a bookbanded book once a week. This is one that they should be able to read approximately 75%+ completely independently. In addition to this, they are free to choose a library book for reading for pleasure each day. This will be a free choice book and may sometimes be ‘too hard’ and sometimes ‘too easy’, but children have chosen it for their own reasons. In all reading activities, please read with your child, instead of their reading alone. If you can just spend 5-10 minutes a day, it will have amazing results.

REMINDERS: Our outdoor PE is on a MONDAY , so please make sure that your child has a tracksuit and trainers for this.  We also have indoor PE on Wednesday, so they will need PE kits and pumps/ trainers. Please send in a water bottle each day and we would be most grateful for each child to bring in a box of tissues so that we can use these throughout the year, espcially as the colder weather approaches.

LETTERS AND SOUNDS: I will hand out the new SPELLING LETTER each FRIDAY -(SPELLINGS  are stuck  in the new journals, a half-term in advance.) I then teach that rule the next week, this lets you know in advance what the focus for the upcoming week will be. There will be lots of activities and daily spelling lessons, followed by a test each Friday. Results will be recorded in journals for you to see.

HOMEWORK: As the year goes on,  children will be given English orMaths homework each Friday, alongside their weekly spellings. Please bring it back on or before the following Friday, when the next set of homework will be given out. Maths homework will link to what we have been learning about in class, giving you a chance to consolidate that learning/give extra support to your child in that area. English homework will be word skills work or comprehension to support your child in answering questions about what they have read. I may also send home extra, personalised homework to support any areas that I notice your child may need help with.

If you have any concerns or questions, please don't hesistate to catch me at the classroom door when school finishes, or continue to use journal to communicate with me.

Between myself in class and with your support from home, I look forward to seeing just how far we can push your children on and enable them to reach their full potential this year. It should be an exciting and rewarding learning journey for all.

Kind Regards

Mr Fillis
