Year 5 A - Miss Kirby / Mr Hodgson 2019 - 2020

Mr Hodgson

WELCOME TO 5C - Mr Hodgson

My name is Mr Hodgson, welcome to 5C's class page! I will be regularly updating this page with information, pictures and blogs relevant to our class.

Please read below for important information for this year and to see what we've been up to so far. Don't forget to look at our gallery page and blogs as well.

Homework is handed out every Friday and is due in the following Wednesday (unless told otherwise). Homework will come in three parts: reading (planners), and maths. If your child is ever stuck on a homework then please do not hesitate to catch me on the door or have your child come and see me. Homework is not designed to take hours, we ask for children to try their hardest for about half an hour. If they're struggling then they are to come and see me.

Spellings will be handed out on a Monday after our 'blind' spelling test. The children will have until the following Thursday to practise these spellings.

Creative Curriculum
Our first Creative Curriculum topic in Year 5 is The Egypticans. Through this topic we delved into the history surrounding the Egyptian Empire and it's legacy.

We offer two hours Physical Education each week with one session indoors and one session outdoors. Children will need tracksuits for outdoor sessions and a Plantation PE kit for indoor sessions. PE is not a voluntary subject and all students must take part unless they have a medical note. We have indoor PE on a Tuesday and outdoor PE on a Wednesday. Please be aware that outdoor PE will be taking place in cold weather, please send a tracksuit into school with your child so they can participate in these lessons.

Walking Home
Your young ones are getting old now! When children reach Year 5 they are allowed to walk home alone if parents provide written consent to their class teacher. The decision as to whether children walk home lies completely with the parent/carer. Factors such as distance from home, maturity of the child and number of roads to cross must be taken into consideration before allowing your child to walk home from school. Their safety is paramount. Written permission must be provided in order for your child to leave school alone - this will help when someone other than the class teacher is dismissing the children at the end of the day.

Also, please inform the school if someone different will be picking your child up (such as a grandparent, other family members or if your child is going home with another parent).

The timetable for break times in Upper School is slightly different from what the children are used to in Lower School. Children have break at 11.00am and lunch at 12.40pm. As you are aware, our food is our fuel! Children must bring a healthy snack into school for them to have at breaktime. The time from them having their breakfast to having their lunch is simply too long for children to go without having some food and drink. Please be aware that snacks must not contain nuts, we do have children with severe airborne nut allergies.

Children in 5C are provided with their own water bottle which will remain in the classroom all year (you do not need to provide your child with a water bottle). Children will be given regular opportunities to drink during the day in order to keep hydrated and stay on top of their game!
