What to remember re. Child Protection
If a child discloses information to you please remember the following…
- Do not try to get the child to say more than they are comfortable with
- Do not lead them to say anything, let them speak in their own words
- Stay calm do not let your emotions show, don’t make comments about what they are saying, for example ‘how awful’ - just listen to them
- Do not promise the child that you won’t tell anyone, but do reassure that whoever you do tell will be able to help
- Reassure the child, tell them they have done the right thing by speaking out
- Report the information immediately to either our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) or a member of staff you are working with if the DSL is not available
- if possible, do not write anything down whilst you are with the child as this can be stressful for them. As soon as possible afterwards, write down, as near as possible, using the child’s words what was said
It may not always be something a child says, it could be something you see such as bruising. You may also see signs of neglect i.e. unwashed or always hungry
If female genital mutilation is reported to you, you should report this directly to the police yourself. Once you have done this please inform our DSL.
If there is any further information you would like about the school and how it works, please ask the staff in your area of work, Operations Manager or Headteacher.
