Children with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities
Pupils with SEND are entitled to a curriculum and care that enables them to experience both achievement and enjoyment at school.
Plantation Primary School is supportive of all children without exception. Our school SENDCos are Mrs Dundon KS1 and KS2, and Miss Dixon Early Years Foundation Stage. They can be contacted by emailing [email protected]
It is important that all relationships at school are positive so that all children feel that they are safe, happy and can learn. All children will experience great teaching, this may mean for some that we work alongside teacher colleagues in specialist settings or with professionals such and Speech and Language Therapists or Educational Psychologists.
Our SENDCos take time, working with parents to build a thorough understanding of each child and their needs. The relationship between home and school is a vital one. They may work with SEND children directly at times but typically will work alongside staff at school, and professionals to providing training and support.
We do not allocate one adult to be with a child full time as we feel this can make children over reliant and disempower them. Instead we have a team of staff who work across each year group, we call this 'Team Around the Child.' Children may have one member of staff who they know particularly well but they will also work with a small team who they are familiar with.
Most children with SEND cope very well in class with some high-quality adaptations to help support them - this may be extra support with managing routines, sensory input, language support, visual instructions, working in a small group, breaking down activities into smaller steps, use of technology or use of voice recorders to name a few.
Some children require short bursts of time outside of class for 1:1 or very small group interventions in addition to what we provide within the classroom- this is to provide intensive support. These interventions are carefully planned and monitored to ensure that they are effective, some examples are: emotional wellbeing, regulations strategies, social story time, social group, specific interventions provided by a therapist or interventions run by staff to support pupils to develop foundational skills. We do not expect pupils to miss lessons they love in order to do an intervention as we believe that all children benefit from a full and varied curriculum.
If your child has SEND needs and you are joining us, it is better to speak to our SENDCos as soon as you can so that they have lots of information to be able to make sure the correct provision is in place.
