'Home Learning Pack 5'

Date: 3rd May 2020 @ 4:49pm

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope you all have had a lovely weekend and are keeping well. We have tried our best to reduce the amount of work that needs to be printed out, so children can record their answers in either: Their home learning notebook or on a piece of paper, when work cannot be printed. Do not feel pressure to complete all this work, it is up to you to decide what suits your family best, we appreciate that learning from home can be extremely challenging, especially with younger children that often require support when doing their work.

‘Home Learning pack 5’ includes:

Maths: 4 maths worksheets based on addition to 20, with answers included. Each lesson also has a matching learning clip for the children, which can be found by following the link: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/. There is also a Friday maths challenge, which will be posted on twitter on Friday morning.

English: As a school we have decided to follow a structure for our English lessons over the school closure, to ensure that the children are continuing to develop all aspects of the English curriculum. On Monday’s the children will receive their spellings on both twitter and spellingshed, as well as a comprehension to complete. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will be SPAG lessons and Friday will be a creative writing opportunity.

Phonics: For phonics we will be using the Monster Phonics Scheme to aid the children in revising their sounds. This week we will be revising oe, ou, ow (as in brown) and ow (as in snow). Each day has a video/ppt that should be viewed first and then an accompanying worksheet. For the first part of the worksheet the children will need to be given a selection of words for the given sound that day for them to practice writing e.g. for ea you could give: heat, treat, leaf, sea and dream. On Friday as there is no phonics lesson this is when we would encourage the children to do their spelling quiz. The videos links are as follows:

Science: This week in Science we are encouraging the children to go on a hunt and see what different plants they can find, either in their garden or on their daily walk (they can either take pictures or a sample of what they find). This video is a good clip to explain to your child/children what a plant is before they begin their hunt: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zpxnyrd/articles/zw2y34j
After this the children can watch this clip about the different parts of a plants (https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zpxnyrd/articles/z3wpsbk) and then dissect and label their plant on a piece of paper.

Geography: This week in geography the children are going to consider how artists paint the weather, by looking at a range of famous artwork and discussing what weather/season they can see in the picture and how this is portrayed. After they will have the opportunity to paint/draw their own weather pictures.

History:  As VE Day is this week we have chosen a range of different tasks for the children to choose from, including: making bunting, baking/cooking recipes from the Second World War and making spitfire planes. If possible it would be lovely if the children could have their own ‘mini street parties’ either in their houses/gardens on Friday the 8th May. Also attached is a power point that explains VE Day to the children in an age-appropriate way.

PSHE: For PSHE this week the children lesson is all about friendship. Follow the link to the BBC website to find the videos and activities: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zhmpnrd

Music: For music this week the children will be learning how to use their bodies to make sounds and rhythms. Follow the link for the music lesson on body percussion https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zb9djhv

DT/Art: This week for DT the children’s challenge is to make a boat which floats successfully and can carry a cargo of at least one penny. If you have more than one person taking part and want to make it a bit more competitive you can test which boat will carry the most pennies before sinking.

We will be tweeting daily reminders of the activities and giving the children challenges to help keep them engaged. Where possible please remain connected by tweeting pictures of your child’s/children’s finished work to their class twitter page. There are also lots of alternative resources on our class’ homepage, if your child fancies something a bit different!  As always if you have any questions or queries please contact me on the school blog/ twitter, or you can call the school office and leave a message

Many thanks as always for continuous support during this difficult time,

Miss McKimm and Mrs Chadwick.
