Year 1 - Miss Smith 2023 - 2024

Welcome to Miss Smith’s Year 1 class page!

@PlantationSmith

Mrs Cornwell and I are so excited to spend our year with you and have a wonderful time learning lots of new things! This year will be extremely busy and this parent/carer information will provide you with the information you need.

PE:

  • Monday (Outdoor PE)
  • Tuesday (Indoor PE)

On these days, children can come into school wearing the correct PE kit. They will keep this on for the whole day. Our school PE kit is black shorts with a white t-shirt; over this children can wear a plain tracksuit with trainers (preferably with velcro, or slip on, not laces). Please make sure that all clothing is clearly labelled.

Water Bottles/Milk/Snack Information:

School milk and a healthy snack (fruit) will be offered to your child each day. In addition to this, all children should bring in a water bottle every day, containing water only, not juice. This is in-keeping with our healthy school approach.

Homework:

Reading:

We will be using a scheme called ‘Read Write Inc.’  Full details about your child’s reading will be sent out to you in a letter, which will be inside your child’s planner.

Library Books:

Children will also be provided with a library book to promote reading for enjoyment. I am extremely passionate about encouraging children to read for pleasure.  Therefore, your child is able to choose a library book from our reading area, which can be changed on Tuesdays only, but your child is welcome to keep their library book for a few weeks if they prefer to.  Please be advised that these books are not necessarily matched to your child’s reading level, since the idea is to allow your child to choose their own book; promoting reading for pleasure.  Therefore, if a book is too easy, allow your child to share it with you and then swap it for another book.  If it is just right or even a little challenging, please assist them when needed and remember they can keep the book for at least one week or as long as they want to.

When reading with your child you could:

  • Get them to tell you what is happening in the story.
  • Ask them questions about the story.
  • Talk about the characters.
  • Make a prediction about what could happen next.
  • Ask them to retell you the key parts of the story.

We look forward to working with you to help your child’s reading develop.

Please be advised that school planners/journals should always be used to record any reading that takes place inside and outside of school and they will be collected in, every week to be checked and signed.  All children should be reading on a regular basis (at least 5 times per week) at home.

Should you wish to send a message to the Year 1 team, please write your message in your child’s planner and ask your child to hand it to me, making me aware that there is a message from home.

Please continue to check this class page regularly for any important updates. We will also post photographs, class news and general reminders on our class Twitter page @PlantationSmith so please follow our class on Twitter.

Should you have any queries or concerns about your child, please do not hesitate to speak to me at the door after school or contact me via the school office (0151 487 5678) or [email protected]  anytime. In the meantime, I wish to thank you for your ongoing support.
