'Home Learning Pack 7'

Date: 16th May 2020 @ 3:30pm

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope you all have had a lovely weekend and are keeping well. We have tried our best to reduce the amount of work that needs to be printed out, so children can record their answers in either: Their home learning notebook or on a piece of paper, when work cannot be printed. Do not feel pressure to complete all this work, it is up to you to decide what suits your family best, we appreciate that learning from home can be extremely challenging, especially with younger children that often require support when doing their work.

‘Home Learning pack 7’ includes:

Maths: 4 maths worksheets based on length, height, capacity and mass with answers included. Each lesson also has a matching learning clip for the children, which can be found by following the link: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/. There is also a Friday maths challenge, which will be posted on twitter on Friday morning.

English: As a school we have decided to follow a structure for our English lessons over the school closure, to ensure that the children are continuing to develop all aspects of the English curriculum. On Monday’s the children will receive their spellings on both twitter and Spelling Shed, as well as a comprehension to complete. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will be SPAG lessons and Friday will be a creative writing opportunity.
For Friday’s creative writing opportunity the children have a short clip to watch, which tells the story of a family of meerkats who have a precious item stolen from them. This video must be watched before the children begin their worksheet: https://www.literacyshed.com/catchit.html.

Phonics: For phonics we will be using the Monster Phonics Scheme to aid the children in revising their sounds. This week we will be revising the different ways to make the ie sound: Monday ie, Tuesday i-e, Wednesday igh and Thursday a revision of all the ways to make the ie sound. Each day has a video/ppt that should be viewed first and then an accompanying worksheet. For the first part of the worksheet the children will need to be given a selection of words for the given sound that day for them to practice writing e.g. for ea you could give: heat, treat, leaf, sea and dream. On Friday as there is no phonics lesson this is when we would encourage the children to do their spelling quiz.

Science: This week in science the children are going to be focusing on what different types of plants they can find either in their gardens or out on their walks. The children have two identification sheets to use on their walks, one for different types of tress and one for different types of plants and flowers.
Experiment: We are carrying on our investigation from last week looking at what plants need to grow: If possible the children are going to plant 4 sets of cress seeds in 4 different conditions (one with water and sunlight, one with water but no sunlight, one with sunlight but no water and one with no water and no sunlight). Instead of planting them in soil they can be planted in cotton wool. Before beginning the children have a prediction worksheet to fill out and then after a week they can fill out their results(this can be found in learning pack 6). If you are unable to get cress seeds the children can fill out their predictions and then I will post my results at the end for them.

Geography: This week in geography the children are going to be creating their own weather diary. If you child fancies taking their learning a step further they could become a meteorologist and create/record their own weather report for one of the days.

History:  For History this week I have attached a BBC bitesize lesson about Queen Elizabeth 1. Please tweet pictures of the fact files if possible as I would love to see them. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zfb8jhv

PSHE: For PSHE this week the children are going to be recognising their emotions and thinking about different ways to manage them. This is a brilliant opportunity for the children to openly discuss different emotions that they have felt throughout lockdown. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zmmgrj6

DT/Art: This week for Art the children are being asked to create texture pictures, by using a pencil to make rubbings of textured objects. Follow the link to the lesson here: https://www.thenational.academy/year-1/foundation/to-go-on-a-texture-treasure-hunt-year-1-wk2-5

PE/PSHE: Continuing on with the theme of recognising and managing our emotions, this week in PE the task is to try out one of the cosmic kids Yoga videos. On the YouTube page there are a range of different yoga videos based on movies/tv shows that children enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/user/CosmicKidsYoga

ICT- For ICT this week the children are being introduced to coding. Follow the link to the lesson here: https://www.youtube.com/user/CosmicKidsYoga

We will be tweeting daily reminders of the activities and giving the children challenges to help keep them engaged. Where possible please remain connected by tweeting pictures of your child’s/children’s finished work to their class twitter page. There are also lots of alternative resources on our class’ homepage, if your child fancies something a bit different!  As always if you have any questions or queries please contact me on the school blog/twitter, or you can call the school office and leave a message

Many thanks as always for continuous support during this difficult time,

Miss McKimm and Mrs Chadwick.
